Will Yankees Position Improve If They Fire Aaron Boone

After last year’s ALCS humiliation, I believed the Yankees ought to have dismissed both Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman. They were plainly doing nothing to move the team forward. And this terrible season has validated that judgment.

Will Yankees Position Improve If They Fire Aaron Boone

The New York Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, described the current campaign as a “disaster” during a press conference. Despite having the second-highest payroll in baseball, their starting rotation has changed frequently due to injuries, and their offensive statistics are among the worst in the league.

The Yankees are now expected to finish last in their division for the first time since 1990 and miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

However, it’s unlikely that any modifications will be made, according to Andy Martino of SNY. Cashman wants to maintain manager Aaron Boone since he will be returning to his position the following year.

“There is only one way Boone will be fired, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the Yankees’ inner workings: managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner would have to overrule GM Brian Cashman and his baseball operations department. And that has never before happened with a managerial decision,” reports Martino.

We are not discussing Boone’s success as a manager. Considering that it is nearly difficult to measure that. Where does his independence start? Where does the interfering of the front office end? Boone’s performance in his job will most likely not be known until he  has another one.

They could certainly choose Don Mattingly. That’d win the press conference, no doubt. and probably win back a sizable percentage of disappointed fans. But it’s likely that the Yankees will need to dismiss Mattingly at some point. Furthermore, that would be a whole dumpster fire.

In these talks, David Cone’s name is frequently brought up. But why would he abandon a prosperous—and undoubtedly simpler—life as a broadcaster? Matt Blake, a pitching coach, may be a sleeper. If the Yankees still couldn’t hit, hitting coach Sean Casey may have made the list.

Because of the organization’s strong collaborative culture, Boone is seen as a crucial component of the everyday decision-making process.

Martino continues, “During the 2021 season, there were voices in Steinbrenner’s ear encouraging him to fire Boone and replace him with Buck Showalter, who was working for the YES Network at the time, according to team sources. Cashman wanted to stick with Boone, so the discussion never gained traction.”

Cashman and Boone appear to be returning for another season in 2024 since an owner is unlikely to make significant changes to his front office or manager.
