Will the Browns sign a backup QB if Deshaun Watson gets a lengthy suspension?
What if Deshaun Watson gets a lengthy suspension ? This offseason, there has been a lot of discussion about the quarterback position for the Cleveland Browns, and it is still ongoing. Deshaun Watson, the quarterback for the Browns, is set to get a ban from the NFL. The Browns will search for a replacement quarterback to back up Jacoby Brissett if Watson receives a protracted ban.
The Browns are hoping for a resolution as soon as possible so they can make plans before training camp starts on July 27. They’ll sign a quarterback to back up temporary starter Jacoby Brissett if Watson is out for a long time.
Watson, Brissett, and are the players currently listed on the Browns’ depth chart. Dobbs, who has participated in OTAs and minicamp, would presumably be demoted to the practice squad if Cleveland decides to sign a new quarterback.
Dobbs was acquired by the Browns in April, providing them access to a third quarterback. He lacks a lot of experience though. Dobbs has only completed 10-of-17 throw attempts in his career, totalling 45 yards and one interception. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 draft, 135th overall.
He was traded by the Steelers at the start of the 2019 season, and he spent the rest of the year with the Jaguars before returning to the team in 2020.
There aren’t many free agent choices available to the Browns at this point in the offseason. Cam Newton is the quarterback with the greatest experience who is available in free agency. The 33-year-old, who just completed a comeback campaign in Carolina, has started a football game each year of his career since being selected in 2011 by his current team. Cam Newton, is probably not a good match for the Browns’ system or locker room. Both the seasoned A.J. McCarron and Garrett Gilbert, who has previous experience playing for the Browns, are still available.

Another passer with starting experience on the market is Mike Glennon. With four of the six teams that have rostered him, the journeyman has made 31 starts overall. Glennon most recently started four games for the Giants last season.
A.J. McCarron and Garrett Gilbert are two potential career backup quarterbacks available through free agency. After recovering from an ACL injury, McCarron has expressed his intention to rejoin the NFL. He also has extensive knowledge of the AFC North because of his lengthy stay in Cincinnati. Although Gilbert has spent less time in the NFL as a backup, he has demonstrated flexibility by playing for four different clubs throughout each of his four seasons. Fortunately, the Browns are one of those teams for Cleveland. Under the leadership of the then-head coach Freddie Kitchens, Gilbert spent the 2019 season assisting Mayfield.
