Will Jimmy Garoppolo play for the San Francisco 49ers again this season? Latest update on QB

The San Francisco 49ers were dealt a huge blow when Jimmy Garoppolo left the field in the first quarter against the Miami Dolphins in Week 13. The quarterback was replaced by ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Brock Purdy at the weekend and surprisingly, Prudy managed to guide San Francisco to an impressive 33-17 victory.

However, there was plenty of concern for Garoppolo after it was revealed that the 31-year-old had broken his foot and was set to miss the remainder of the season. The Niners already lost Trey Lance due to an ankle injury and with Garoppolo out as well, they have no dependable quarterback to guide them through the postseason, if they qualify for the NFL playoffs.

How long is Jimmy Garoppolo out for?

Nonetheless, sources from ESPN have claimed that Jimmy Garoppolo may still be fit enough to play this season as he has avoided surgery on his foot. If his rehab goes well, he would be out for six to eight weeks. This would mean that he could be fit for the playoffs.

The NFC divisional round is seven weeks away while the NFC Championship Game is in eight weeks. The Super Bowl will be held on February 12, 2023. Although the schedule seems a bit tight, it will be interesting to see whether Garoppolo will be available for the playoffs.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan has downplayed the possibility of Garoppolo returning this season. While speaking to reporters on Wednesday he said, “Still going to be a big recovery for Jimmy. There’s that way outside chance (of a return) late in the playoffs but just an outside chance. Not real optimistic about it but never rule it out.”

The Niners are currently leading the NFC West division with eight wins and four losses. They will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14.
