Why Is Luka Doncic Suing His Own Mother?
Ever since he signed for the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic has been a revelation in the NBA. The Slovenian has shown that he is easily one of the best emerging talents in the league and that good talent can be found outside the United States as well. Doncic is currently representing his country at the EuroBasket tournament where he scored 35-points with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and four steals for Slovenia in their last game.
Wonder why Luka Doncic chooses to spend his NBA offseasons playing hard for Slovenia — stitches in his head, balky wrist, gimpy fingers and all?

However, despite his brilliant performances on the court, it is the news outside the basketball court that has placed Doncic in the headlines once again. The Mavericks star is currently embroiled in a legal war with his mother over the ownership of his trademark “Luka Doncic 7”.

According to reports, Doncic gave his mother permission to register a trademark on his behalf during his rookie season in 2018. The Slovenian superstar attempted to get ownership of his trademark last year but his mother did not comply to his demands. Doncic confirmed with long-time NBA reporter Marc Stein that he filed a petition with the United States Patent and Trademark Office regarding canceling the “Luka Doncic 7” trademark.
Luka Doncic takes a bold step against his mother
Doncic shared his thoughts on his legal move. He said, “I have a lot to look forward to as I continue to grow as a player and a person and it’s important to me to control my own brand and focus on giving back to my communities.”

It is reported that Luka Doncic sought to trademark the name “Luka Doncic” and it was “preliminarily” rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Therefore, filing a was a “last resort in a bid to gain full control over his name, brand, charitable foundation, and business affairs, since conflicting trademarks prevent Doncic from holding clear rights to use his own name.”
In the meantime, Doncic has unveiled a new logo that will be used in all of his collaborations. It will be interesting to see how the legal case between him and his mother plays out and who emerges victorious.
