Why did Josh Rosen fail so bad in the NFL?
In the midst of Thursday’s biggest news, with the Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murray tying their futures together with a monstrous five-year, $230M contract extension, one free agent quarterback signing was announced at the same moment, as the Cleveland Browns announced a one-year deal with former first-round pick Josh Rosen to backup the team in the 2022 season.
The timing is interesting, to say the least. Rosen was drafted with the 10th pick by the Cardinals themselves and he was booted from the franchise after just one year, as they changed courses and drafted Kyler Murray with the 1st overall pick in the 2019 draft. Rosen also had stints with four different teams, but failed to settle in any of them. He now has a chance in Cleveland, a team that many believed would pick him back in 2018.
Rosen was a talented prospect coming out of UCLA in 2018. He was a smart quarterback who could see the middle of the field very well, had good physical attributes for the position and was the most-accurate quarterback out of that class.

While some would agree that he was never given a fair chance, playing behind horrendous offensive lines and without good weapons to help him, it’s still true that he failed to do what you expect out of good quarterbacks: provide competent play and improve his team, even if the offense around him wasn’t the best.
These are fair expectations from a top 1o quarterback pick, and Rosen failed to meet them.

After being traded to the Cardinals, Rosen became a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in that sad, unbelievable 2019 season, which Brian Flores recently accused the team of purposedly tanking in order to get a better pick in the 2020 draft and get Tua Tagovailoa, which they did in the end even by winning five games.
Rosen also had stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the San Francisco 49ers and, most recently, the Atlanta Falcons.

That’s just how the NFL works sometimes. Even though he was a talented prospect, he never fulfilled his potential and became a good passer. No one should expect his stint with the Browns to last long.
