Why Did the Broncos Release Star QB Russell Wilson After Two Seasons?

“We spoke with Russell Wilson today to inform of his release after the start of the league year,” general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton said in joint statement. “On behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career.”

“As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency.”

Although Wilson put together a respectable 2023 in which quarterback led the Broncos to a five-game winning streak and passed for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, Denver’s front office brass was not happy with Wilson’s contract.

Wilson was still two years away from signing his 2019 deal with the Seahawks when he was signed by the Broncos. Denver then made him an additional five-year contract offer to keep him on board.

Wilson, 35, was recognized by the Broncos for his accomplishments. The group said, “We are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond.”

Wilson joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 as part of a sensational trade and contract package. Wilson had inked a $245 million, five-year contract deal with Denver.

Wilson’s difficulties in 2022 were the first indication that things were not right between him and his bosses. He had the worst year of his professional life, eschewing his typically effective throwing for misdirected passes and interceptions. With 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions at the end of the season, Wilson’s performance in advanced analytics was below average in every category.

Wilson appeared to have a chance for a change of pace with Sean Payton’s arrival in 2023. It did, in a lot of ways. The Super Bowl-winning manager and Wilson developed a strong bond, especially during Denver’s five-game winning streak that saw them rub shoulders with the best players in the league.

Wilson thanked Broncos fans and his teammates for their support in a separate statement.

“Over these last two years, you have welcomed my family and me with open arms and have embraced us as members of the Denver community,” he said. “This city will always hold a special place in my heart. Our family grew here, we made countless memories and friendships, and formed relationships that will last a lifetime.”

He ended his statement, saying, “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.

“God’s got me. I am excited for what’s next.”

Wilson finishes with 6,594 yards, 42 throwing touchdowns, and 19 interceptions during his time at Empower Field. The Broncos were spared paying the 35-year-old quarterback $37 million in 2025 because they cut him before March 13, which is the official start of the league’s 2024 calendar. Denver is still obligated to pay dead money associated with Wilson’s agreement, totaling $85 million.
