Why Did Brian Callahan Is A Better Replacement For Mike Vrabel As HC Titans?

The Titans made the first external head coaching hire of the 2024 offseason, breaking the slow-moving hiring cycle in the NFL. Brian Callahan is supposedly the future head coach of the Titans. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the Bengals offensive coordinator spoke with the team on Monday before deciding to take over as head coach.

Why Did Brian Callahan Is A Better Replacement For Mike Vrabel As HC Titans?

In the NFL, Callahan is the most recent in a succession of youthful, offensive-minded coaching appointments. The Titans are hoping he can help Will Levis grow and invigorate an offensive unit that finished the regular season in the bottom six in terms of yards per game and points scored.

The Titans will appoint Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, as their sixth head coach in club history, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The team had 16 head coaches during the Houston Oilers period.

In addition to the Titans, Callahan also had interviews with the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers during this year’s coaching cycle, making him a sought-after commodity. Amy Adams Strunk, the controlling owner, made the proper decision in hiring him for a number of reasons, chief among them being that 24-year-old quarterback would Levis would benefit greatly from his offensive skill set as he enters his second season.

Who is Brian Callahan?

The 39-year-old offensive coordinator for the Bengals, Callahan, is the man the Titans intend to select as their next head coach. He joined the NFL in 2010 and has served as Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator for the past five seasons.

Callahan was successful in his Bengals job. He made Cincinnati’s offense, which had finished in the bottom five in scoring during his first two seasons, rank seventh in each of the next two seasons after assisting Joe Burrow in adjusting to life in the NFL.

Callahan had to deal with Burrow’s injuries during the 2023 season, but he was successful with backup Jake Browning. The former undrafted free agent completed a league-high 70.4 percent of his passes for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading the Bengals to  a 4-3 record in seven starts after Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist.

In spite of Burrow’s injury, Browning’s performance contributed to Callahan’s reputation as a top coaching prospect, since the Bengals were able to qualify for the postseason. All in all, they almost missed with a 9-8 record, but even so, Callahan’s value rose significantly as a result of their success without Burrow.

Callahan’s presence also makes it more likely that his father Bill, the offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns, will follow him to Tennessee. Additionally, Callahan gives the Titans an advantage in signing upcoming free agent Tee Higgins, a receiver who could change games when paired with DeAndre Hopkins, freeing up Treylon Burks, the 2022 first-round pick, to develop without as much pressure on him.

Since 2020, Bill Callahan has served as Cleveland’s offensive line coach. The Browns have allowed 164 sacks in that time while fielding a top-10 rushing offence in three of the last four years.

Callahan has experience working with some of the top quarterbacks in the game, such as Peyton Manning, Joe Burrow, Matthew Stafford, and Derek Carr. Will Levis, a rookie quarterback for the Titans, needs to grow as a quarterback.
