Kingsbury was hired as quality control in August 2008 by the University of Houston football staff. Kingsbury was attracted to Houston because of his connections to Dana Holgorsen, who had previously served as the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech. The success of the Houston offense in 2009 under Case Keenum’s leadership earned Kingsbury praise.

Keenum set numerous NCAA Division I passing records before his time at Houston. Holgorsen left to take the role of offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State University, and Kingsbury was promoted to work with the former University of Houston received Jason Phillips as the Cougars’ co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Kingsbury earned Coach Kevin Sumlin’s trust and started calling all the offensive plays very quickly. Houston dominated college football in 2011, averaging 50 points and nearly 600 yards of offense per game, and Kingsbury was named the 2011 Offensive Coordinator of the Year.
