He spent his early years moving between military posts in two- and three-year intervals, starting in Okinawa, where he was born, then to many sites in California, back to Okinawa, then to North Carolina, then to Hawaii, and then back to California, where he eventually settled in San Diego. He is not the only child in the family, as has a sister named Melissa.
