American broadcaster Stephanie Ready previously covered the NBA Charlotte Hornets before joining NBA on TNT. She was recognised in 2001 as the first female coach of a men’s professional league club while coaching basketball prior to beginning her broadcasting career. She was a part of Hornets broadcasts for more than ten years, including a time when she served as the first full-time female NBA game analyst, following a spell as head coach in the NBA Development League.

Ron “Fang” Mitchell, the head coach of the women’s volleyball team at Coppin State, encouraged Ready to postpone graduate school in favour of a coaching career. The Lady Eagles’ 129-match losing skid was broken shortly after Ready was hired, two weeks before the start of the season. At the time, Ready was one of the youngest Division I volleyball coaches in the nation. Mitchell asked Ready once more to help him on the bench for the men’s basketball team at Coppin State.

She joined Bernadette Mattox, who coached at the University of Kentucky from 1990 to 1995 under former coach Rick Pitino, and Jennifer Johnston of Oakland University in Michigan as the only other women to ever coach Division I men’s basketball.

Only Ready, out of the three, was permitted to recruit off-campus. The choice to recruit Ready was “a no-brainer,” Mitchell told blackvoices.com. “She’s very detail-oriented and one of the most organized people I’ve had a pleasure to work with.”
