He was a member of the San Diego State Aztecs basketball team in college. Schakel finished his college career with 1,034 points and 225 field goals from behind the 3-point line, which ranks third in SDSU history. Schakel earned a marketing degree from SDSU’s Fowler College of Business and was recognized as a Scholar-Athlete each semester.

Schakel attended Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California, before joining the Aztecs. In high school, he was a member of the squad that won the California Interscholastic Federation’s Division IV Championship in his freshman year, and as a senior, he assisted his team in winning the Open Division Championship, the state’s top high school basketball title.

Schakel was a 4-star recruit in the 2017 class, according to ESPN, and was awarded first-team All-CIF, All-Del Rey League, an All-CIF Southern Section Open Division, as well as the Daily Breeze’s All-Area First Team.
