He was selected for the second-team All-SEC during his first year of college at Auburn. At the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup in Argentina, Okoro represented the United States. His squad won the gold medal thanks to his 4.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game average over seven games.

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Okoro as the fifth overall choice in the 2020 NBA Draft. On November 21, three days later, the Cleveland Cavaliers declared that Okoro had been signed. Okoro made his NBA debut on December 23, 2020.
