The St. Louis Rams selected Zuerlein in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, 171st overall. Since Stephen Gostkowski in 2006, he was the first non-Bowl Championship Series kicker drafted, and Paul Ernster in 2005 was the last kicker drafted below the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Zuerlein agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Jets on March 26, 2022.
