Prior to being hired as head coach of the Vikings in 2022, O’Connell started coaching in 2015 as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, and Los Angeles Rams.

O’Connell was appointed head coach of the Minnesota Vikings on February 16, 2022, becoming the 11th head coach in the team’s history. He and Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins were reunited. O’Connell had previously trained Cousins in 2017 while serving as the quarterback’s coach for the Washington Redskins.

For the 2019 campaign, O’Connell took over as offensive coordinator, and Cavanaugh became a senior assistant. O’Connell joined the Los Angeles Rams on January 16, 2020, as their offensive coordinator.
