Golden State selected him with the 11th overall choice in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft. The pair became known as “the Splash Brothers” in 2014 after Thompson and colleague Stephen Curry combined for 484 three-pointers in a single season, a then-NBA record.

During his recovery from his knee injury, Thompson then tore his Achilles tendon, which caused him to miss the whole 2020–21 season. After missing nearly 31 months, he started playing again in January 2022. He later assisted the Warriors in winning their fourth championship in eight years in 2022 when they defeated the Boston Celtics in six games.
