He twice took home the title of Gatorade Maryland Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He received a spot on the 2018 McDonald’s All-American squad. The 10th pick in the first round of the 2020 NBA draught went to the Phoenix Suns, who chose Smith. Smith was exchanged for Torrey Craig and a future second-round draft pick by the Indiana Pacers on February 10, 2022. On July 1, 2022, Smith agreed to a new two-year contract with the Pacers.
