At the age of 22, his hometown Denver hired McDaniel Broncos to work as a coaching intern for head coach Mike Shanahan in 2005. McDaniel joined the Houston Texans in 2006 as an offensive assistant under head coach Gary Kubiak, with whom he had previously worked at the Denver Broncos.
Troy Calhoun, Mike Sherman, and Kyle Shanahan, three separate offensive coordinators and future head coaches, were among those McDaniel worked with in Houston.
