He was born and reared in Central Florida. Out of high school, he was regarded as one of the top MLB draft prospects, but he withdrew his name from consideration to enroll at LSU.

He was voted co-SEC Player of the Year in his sophomore season and was unanimously selected to the first team of All-Americans. Crews played for the American national collegiate baseball team for two years.
