Kotsay was chosen by the Florida Marlins with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 1996 Major League Baseball draughts. Before taking over as the team’s center fielder in 1998, Kotsay played in 14 games for the Marlins in 1997. He played with many big teams like San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers.

Kotsay began working as a special assistant in the Padre’s front office in 2014. The Padres announced Kotsay as their new hitting coach on December 1st, 2014, taking Phil Plantier’s place. The Oakland Athletics hired Kotsay as their new bench coach on November 12, 2015, taking Mike Aldrete’s place. He was hired by the Athletics in 2017 as the quality control coach. Kotsay was elevated to manager status by the Athletics for the 2022 campaign.
