Why Is Dr Bennet Omalu In News?
Following the recent controversy regarding his head injuries and the concussion protocol in the game, renowned neuropathologist Bennet Omalu advised NFL player Tua Tagovailoa to give up the game.
Last Thursday, when the Miami Dolphins lost to the Cincinnati Bengals, Tua Tagovailoa was hurt in the second quarter. The decision by the medical staff to let him play despite appearing to have had a concussion four days earlier drew a lot of criticism.

The quarterback remained on the field for over 10 minutes before being carted off and taken to the hospital. His arms and fingers flexed in what is known as the “fencing response,” a reflex commonly linked to concussions or other brain disorders. Just four days prior, during the Dolphins’ game against the Bills, he suffered a head injury from a tackle that caused him to appear unsteady when rising to his feet.

“If you love your life, if you love your family, you love your kids – if you have kids – it’s time to gallantly walk away,” Omalu said in a message to the Miami star.
“Go find something else to do.
“Tua, my brother. I love you. I love you as much as I love my son.
“Stop playing. Stop. Hang your helmet and gallantly walk away.
“Sometimes money is not more valuable than human life. Twenty billion dollars is not worth more than your brain.

Dr Omalu’s latest discovery, also known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, was made possible by his access to the brain tissue of famed Pittsburgh Steelers centre Mark Webster. The athlete died of what appeared to be a heart attack, but doctor Omalu’s findings revealed a much grimmer picture.
