Keep in mind that when you’re the No. 1 influencer, it’s not necessarily about how you perform on the pitch. These rankings are based on clicks and the work you do for the sport on social media.

Will Spain’s Clara Fernandez ever take home an Olympic medal? That is extremely unlikely given that she is currently ranked 307th in the world and has never finished higher than 156th. Long ago, Paige Spiranac proved to us all that none of that matters.

Fernandez has a respectable 453k Instagram followers outside of competitive sports. The Nike athlete is also beginning to grow her Tiktok audience (about 40k) while juggling her pole vaulting obligations (remember, Nike is in the business of selling track gear and they understand follower counts).

You can make as much fun of the rise of Olympian-caliber athletes as you like.

Alica Schmidt of Germany should be regarded as the sexiest athlete in the world, I determined in 2017. She was essentially unknown but had about 50k Instagram followers. She currently has 3.7 million fans. She’s a great star in Europe and hasn’t sniffed an Olympic medal.

Websites are still giving credit to that original post even though she is now regarded as the sexiest athlete in the world.

But as the internet develops, it’s time for fresh talent like Fernandez to emerge.
