The Morgan Wootten Player of the Year Award, given to the best player in the country, was won by Barnes. Barnes declared his entry into the 2012 NBA draft. Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Bobcats, Washington Wizards, and Toronto Raptors were the four teams he worked out with. The Golden State Warriors picked him with the seventh overall pick. Barnes and the Dallas Mavericks agreed to a four-year contract on July 9, 2016. Barnes was dealt to the Sacramento Kings on February 6, 2019, while Dallas was playing the Charlotte Hornets.
