In his playing career, Alex was drafted by Minnesota Twins in their 12th round of the 1993 Major League Baseball draft but he declined the draft offer and pursued his college baseball at the University of Miami. Alex was named the best collegiate defensive player in his 1996 season. Later, he was drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers in their 3rd round selection in the 1996 MLB draft. Later in his career, he played for many MLB teams as the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, etc.

After retiring from MLB he was appointed as a coach and manager of the Puerto Rican Winter League team named Criollos de Caguas. He was appointed as a bench coach for Houston Astros in 2016. Later, in 2017 he was appointed by the Boston Red Sox manager for three contracts with them. They extended his contract with him for the 2021 and 2022 seasons with a club option for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
