After that, beginning in 2003, he worked as the Cleveland Indians’ minor league hitting coordinator. Shelton served as the Cleveland Indians’ hitting coach from 2005 to 2009 and the Tampa Bay Rays from 2010 to 2016.

Shelton then served as the Toronto Blue Jays’ quality control coach in 2017. From 2018 to 2019, he served as the Minnesota Twins’ bench trainer. Shelton played catcher in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees in 1992 and 1993, moving up the organization’s minor league ladder from the Short-Season A Oneonta Yankees to the Single-A Greensboro Hornets before having elbow surgery that put an end to his playing career. Shelton started coaching minor league clubs in 1997 and oversaw Yankee minor league squads from 2000 to 2002.

Shelton served as the Cleveland Indians’ organization’s minor league hitting coordinator from 2003 to midway through the 2005 season when he temporarily took the job of major league hitting coach Eddie Murray. After the 2009 campaign, Shelton was hired as the Tampa Bay Rays hitting coach.
