Who In Cowboys Is To Blame For The Humiliating Loss To Cardinals?

The Dallas Cowboys’ two-week domination came to an end in Week 3. After opening their season in such intimidating manner, the Cowboys came down to the NFL’s any-given-Sunday reality with a 28-16 loss to the previously winless Arizona Cardinals.

The Cowboys (2-1) were a dismal 1 of 5 in the red zone, culminating with a Prescott pick in the end zone by Kyzir White with 3:05 left that put an end to any hopes of a stirring Cowboys comeback.

The Cowboys ran 75 plays to the Cardinals’ 53, but were defeated by a score of 12 points. They also won the fight for time of possession by more than nine minutes. Dallas’ defense surrendered 400 yards of offense against Arizona after surrendering 386 yards combined in its previous two games.  The Cowboys also committed an eyebrow-lifting 13 penalties for 107 yards.

Arizona’s defense then performed flawlessly, restricting Dallas to field goals and forcing a crucial turnover late in the fourth quarter to seal the game, 28-16.

It is a disgrace for Dallas to not only lose, but to lose so terribly in that situation. And someone must accept responsibility for the loss.

Who In the Cowboys Is To Blame For The Humiliating Loss To Cardinals?

1) The Quarterback – Prescott often missed throws in this contest in Glendale. To make matters worse, it appeared as if the most important plays in the game, whether on pivotal third downs or in the red zone, were either not where they needed to be or were badly timed.

The cherry on top was Dallas’ fourth-quarter interception, which eventually clinched the game. Prescott wasn’t under too much pressure, but he still tried to push a pass into the end zone. Instead, one of the two defenders between the quarterback and the intended target sprang up and intercepted the pass.

It sucks, it’s humbling, but to say it’s a wake-up call, we knew we had a lot of adversity and we just didn’t get it done. It just goes back to myself, the offense, in the red zone. We get better there, we win this game. But we’ve got to fix that area, period.” said the QB.

2) McCarthy– The Cowboys outgained the Cardinals 416-400, but their performance in the red zone was crucial. McCarthy accepted responsibility for Dallas’ inability to execute in the red zone, telling reporters following the game, “I’ve got to do a better job.” That begins with me.”

McCarthy explained why he ran the ball so much with the clock ticking down: “They were playing high in coverage.”

The penalties were somewhat connected to it, but they were also the main reason to blame Mike McCarthy for the loss. The Cowboys’ football was sloppy, sloppy in every way.

In the first two weeks of the 2023 season, the Cowboys had only 11 penalties. In the Week 3 loss to the Cardinals, they had 13 penalties for a total of 107 yards.

3) The Back Seven– The back seven bears responsibility not only for their efforts in the passing game, but also for their full ineptness against the run.

In this game, the Cowboys allowed 7.5 yards per play. Arizona deserves credit for doing a good job of keeping Micah Parsons and Demarcus Lawrence at least somewhat restricted. Furthermore, the group behind the defensive front was constantly caught off guard or duped. As a result, Josh Dobbs averaged 7.7 yards per throw and 7.4 yards per rush.
