‘Where Would Jorge Go From There?’- MMA Pundit On the ‘Huge Risk’ of Pitting Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz Against Each Other Again

MMA pundit Chael Sonnen talked about a marquee match-up between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal that is doing the rounds on the rumor mill. On his YouTube platform, Sonnen explained why he felt the booking between Diaz and Masvidal was perhaps not the route the UFC would go down, considering Nate Diaz has one foot out of the door.

Stockton’s second son is looking to fight the final fight on his UFC deal and possibly foray into the world of celebrity crossover boxing. There’s no doubt that Nate Diaz would be a box office grand slam in such a realm, and there are a lot of different avenues for him to explore.

Chael Sonnen has something to say

‘The American Gangster’ talked about how a star who is likely on his way out of the company could jeopardize the future of an existing star like Jorge Masvidal, who is already on a career downturn as is. Masvidal hasn’t won a fight since he fought Nate Diaz back in November 2019 and it all boils down to who the UFC is looking to put over with this potential booking.

“Is he going in the wrong direction? We don’t know, he isn’t doing anything wrong. He’s doing exactly what he should be doing but let’s just take a good look real fast at Nate vs Masvidal. Yes, we wanna see it, yes, that’s going to be a big fight, okay. But, you do need to look at it from the organisation’s standpoint.”

“In an attempt to guess, is that something they want to sign off on? It looks like Nate is going to go afterwards, it’s a tremendous risk, to put a huge star that you’ve got under contract, it’s just a huge risk, be careful how you do that. Then what would even happen with a win? Where would Jorge go from there? I’m not sure that’s the capacity he’s going to be used in, I’m not sold on that.” [h/t bjpenn.com.]

Regardless of the route the UFC decides to go, there’s plenty of money to be made on all fronts. Injecting names like Conor McGregor and Colby Covington into the mix leaves several possible match-ups that make sense for all parties involved.
