It’s a good bet that quarterback Dak Prescott surprising the market with a new contract extension would dominate the news cycle, at least for a few days, given how the Dallas Cowboys’ season ended—a 48-32 home playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The quarterback’s $59.4 million salary cap is the second highest in the NFL, only surpassed by Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns. After the 2020 season, Prescott signed a four-year, $160 million contract with a $126 million guarantee. This is the last year of the agreement.

The easiest option to avoid Prescott’s enormous $59.46 million salary cap impact for the upcoming season is to sign an extension. For maybe four more years, he would surpass Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s average yearly salary of $55 million.

Dallas’ future is getting more and more hazy with all the impending changes, including an aging offensive line and a head coach who is a lame duck. Having a quarterback ranked in the top ten reduces such hits and should keep the Cowboys competitive.

According to Prescott’s contract, the Cowboys are not allowed to give him the franchise tag in 2025. In addition, he has a no-trade clause, which essentially limits his trade options to teams he approves of.

For a number of reasons, including the Cowboys’ strong desire to win in 2024 and their belief that Prescott can help them do it, a trade is still improbable.

This would be a better choice if the last few seasons’ stagnation has made you uninterested in Dallas’ next moves and hopeful that a brand-new rookie quarterback will arrive soon. But keep in mind that allowing Prescott to walk will still result in a dead cap of around $55 million, which would make the reconstruction process even more difficult.

Is it a means by which Dallas may escape paying Prescott $300 million? Perhaps. Is it, above all, a means of buying time? It appears that Dallas should get ready to “flip the switch” for that reason.
