What Led Travis Kelce To Change Positions From Quarterback To Tight End?

Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs has proven himself to be the finest at his position, and when he decides to put up his cleats, he’ll undoubtedly be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

What Led Travis Kelce To Change Positions From Quarterback To Tight End?

The 33-year-old tight end averages more receiving yards per game (71.8) than any tight end in NFL history and is fourth among tight ends in all-time receiving yards (10,344).

Although Kelce is one of the NFL’s most distinctive weapons, his football career was once in jeopardy.

Recently, the two-time Super Bowl victor revealed that he formerly played tight end and quarterback for the University of Cincinnati Wildcats. But prior to the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl, he failed a drug test, leading to his suspension from the team.

In a current episode of “Bussin’ With the Boys Podcast” from Barstool Sports, Kelce said:

“I got kicked out of college because of it. I partied a little too much down there, got hit with a drug test, and from that point on, I realized I gotta tighten the f—- up.”

Added him:

“What it did was it really kicked me into the tight end room. I was still playing QB then. It was like, ‘Alright, you can come walk on the team, but we don’t need a quarterback. You can just be an athlete on scout team for a year, we’ll figure it out.'”

Travis Kelce continued by expressing his gratitude to his brother Jason Kelce, the center for the Philadelphia Eagles, for supporting him during the ban.

From 2006 through 2010, the elder Kelce also competed for Cincinnati. Before Super Bowl LVII, the seven-time All-Pro tight end talked about how Jason had helped him get his football career back on track.

“He went into the coaches office and talked to numerous coaches to try and give me another chance. I’m forever in debt to this guy for putting his name, our name — the Kelce name — on the line. When I say I owe it all to him, I really do.”

Even though it wasn’t what Kelce desired at first, everything turned out good for him in the end.

As he attempts to move up the list, Travis Kelce, who is presently fourth all-time in tight end receiving yards, doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
