What is the Michael Jordan Trophy? All you need to know about the new NBA awards

The National Basketball Association (NBA) unveiled six newly built trophies today with the names of NBA legends. At the end of the season, the winners of the Kia Performance Awards will receive these prizes.

What is the Michael Jordan Trophy?

The Michael Jordan Trophy, which will be given to the Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, is the centerpiece of the collection of reinvented trophies that honors the league pioneers who contributed to their creation. The Michael Jordan Trophy, named for the NBA icon widely recognized as one of the best players of all time, will now be presented to the NBA MVP. Throughout his career, Jordan received five MVP awards.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “Our new collection of trophies celebrates some of the greatest and most impactful players in the history of the NBA. As we recognize the league’s top performers each season, we also pay tribute to the legends who embody these prestigious awards.”

In recognition of his jersey number and the six NBA championships he won with the Chicago Bulls, the Michael Jordan trophy will be 23.6 inches tall and 23.6 pounds in weight. The Charlotte Hornets chairman approved of the concept but requested that the statue not feature himself but rather a person pursuing excellence. He also turned down a request for a statement made via the NBA.

In conjunction with Solomon, the Jerry West Trophy and the ensuing freshly created trophies given to the Kia Performance Award winners were created. Each trophy has an embedment inside a 15-inch crystal net framework. In order to provide a clear line of sight to the icon, the front face is flat. At the bottom, a detailed etching of the award and recipient is visible.

In the previous two seasons, the league changed the names of nearly all of its awards and even introduced a few new ones. The NBA Clutch Player of the Year will receive The Jerry West Award, which, like almost all other league honors, will be decided by a media panel, according to a league statement released on Tuesday.

These awards acknowledge the NBA greats who have exemplified brilliance while also rewarding the athletes who have worked hard to achieve the heights of individual excellence.
