What Is the ‘BMF’ Belt? Will It Be Contested for at UFC 272 Between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington?

The UFC has been around for close to three decades now. During that time, the promotion has seen growth in all aspects of the business. What started out as no-holds-barred fighting slowly developed into a regulated sport. Over the last few decades, women have started competing in the sport, new divisions have been formed and new champions have been crowned.

However, in the history of the promotion, there had never been a situation where a special belt was created for a fight between two individuals. If a fight had a belt on the line, it was always for a particular weight class. The first and only exception to this was the ‘BMF’ belt created by the UFC for the main event at UFC 244 between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz.

After a win over Anthony Pettis, Diaz called out Masvidal and said that he wanted to defend his ‘baddest motherfu**er’ in the game belt against ‘Gamebred’. Both Masvidal and the UFC obliged and a ‘BMF’ belt was created for a special fight between two special individuals.

‘Gamebred’ went on to win the fight and in the process became the first and only ‘BMF’ holder in the UFC. That title has since never been competed for. Ahead of his much-anticipated fight against Covington, fans are eager to know if the ‘BMF’ belt is on the line.

Is the ‘BMF’ belt on the line for Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington at UFC 272?

At this point in time, the ‘BMF’ belt will not be on the line at UFC 272. The promotion has not confirmed that the two men will compete for the belt. Moreover, ‘Gamebred’ has stated in multiple interviews that Covington is not a ‘BMF’ and therefore can not compete for the same.

Also, this is one of the very few times that a PPV main event is not headlined by a title fight. He is the only person apart from Conor McGregor to have headlined multiple non-title fight PPV events which just goes to show what a big draw Masvidal has become for the promotion in recent years.
