What Could Be The Landing Spots For GM Kim Ng?

Kim Ng, the general manager of the Miami Marlins, startled the baseball world on Monday morning when she revealed in a statement that she will not be joining the organization in 2024. Ng informed Tyler Kepner of the New York Times that she felt she needed to leave after recent meetings with owner Mitch Sherman because they “were not completely aligned” about the direction of the baseball operations division.

What Could Be The Landing Spots For GM Kim Ng?

This raises a lot of doubts about Ng’s future in addition to those regarding the Marlins’ future and their desire (or lack thereof) to spend the money required to win.

She did wonders for the Marlins’ roster, bringing in the players and coaches that enabled them to make an unexpected postseason run in 2023.

The Marlins wanted her back in exchange for her efforts. That wasn’t shocking at all. In the following days, we’ll undoubtedly learn more about Ng’s choice to reject the 2024 option. Many inquiries. Was a request for an extension made? Bruce Sherman, the owner, essentially exercised the 2024 option, or what?

After guiding Miami to an unusual playoff place this season, the 54-year-old, who made history as the first woman to serve as general manager for a men’s club in the history of major North American sports, is sure to be in high demand. The fact that they made the playoffs was largely due to Ng’s skillful trades for Josh Bell and Jake Burger throughout the season, as well as the additions of left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo and batting champion Luis Arraez.

However, she is currently back on the market, and it is unknown where she will be in 2024.

“Last week, Bruce and I discussed his plan to reshape the baseball operations department,” Ng told Tyler Kepner of The Athletic on Monday. “In our discussions, it became apparent that we were not completely aligned on what that should look like and I felt it best to step away.”

The Red Sox, who let go of chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom in September, might be one prospective employer for Ng, while other opportunities could open up in the coming weeks.

The Mets have already hired former Brewers executive David Stearns to fill their top post, but they do potentially still have an opening in the role originally occupied by former general manager Billy Eppler, who left his position earlier this month.

A few days after Stearns’ first news conference, Eppler abruptly announced his resignation. A short while later, it was revealed—leaked, to be sure—that MLB was looking into Eppler for questionable manipulation of how his team used the injured list. It’s quite little in comparison to other things Mets staffers have faced investigations for, but it was sufficient to leave a vacancy in New York’s front office.

There is currently no opening with the Yankees. However, the team had finished a terribly dismal season, so owner Hal Steinbrenner hired an independent company to examine the club’s operations.

The Yankees would undoubtedly benefit greatly from a change at the top of the organization, and more club supporters doubt Steinbrenner has the courage to make such a drastic change. Since 1998, Brian Cashman has served as the Yankees’ general manager after joining the team twelve years earlier.
