What Aaron Rodgers Says Goes: Owner Woody Johnson Didn’t Fire Jets’ Coach & GM

On February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, The Three Amigos—Joe Douglas, Robert Saleh, and therefore Nathaniel Hackett—will return in 2024 to support Aaron Rodgers in winning Super Bowl LIX.

What Aaron Rodgers Says Goes: Owner Woody Johnson Didn’t Fire Jets’ Coach & GM

Prior to the game on Sunday, Saleh had three seasons of experience and was 16–32. As of June 2019, Douglas has been the team’s general manager for 25 years.

However, Jets owner Woody Johnson told reporters on Sunday that he plans to continue with both men through 2024.

By giving up $35 million of his own wealth and declaring his intention to continue playing for two more years, Rodgers effectively forced Woody to wrap presents beneath Douglas and Saleh’s Christmas trees—and thus, under Rodgers’ best friend Hackett.

“My decision is to keep them,” Johnson told multiple media outlets including the New York Post before Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. “I think we’ve had some very positive moves. The culture of the team is a lot better. The defense is better. The offense needs a few pieces.”

Furthermore, why does Johnson wish to retain an unproven coach to build a club assembled by an unproven general manager?

“Just to keep the continuity going with Aaron and the team we’ve got,” Johnson said.

The missing piece that Woody had been longing for was Rodgers, and when he disappeared, the season also vanished. Douglas had compounded his mistake three years prior when he selected Zach Wilson second overall by neglecting to sign a more capable and experienced backup in case of an Only The Jets disaster.

“Obviously I can sit here and give you a reason why I think I’m the right coach,” Saleh said, “but at the same time there’s gonna be a lot of things that I’ve gotta reflect on and acknowledge and get better at, not just for myself but globally, and use this offseason to make sure we’re attacking it in a way that gets us to our goal that we all believe we can get to which is a championship.”

Saleh needs Rodgers to coach the offence while he and DC Jeff Ulbrich coach the defence.

The Jets have made organisational choices in the past based on Aaron Rodgers’ preferences. He said they would be good, so they added a few players in the summer. At best, most of them have been mediocre.

Rodgers’ confidence in offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is perhaps another reason they’re sticking with him. This season, Hackett designed the NFL’s second-lowest scoring offence.
