“We Couldn’t See the Rim”: European Coach Heaps Massive Praise on ‘NBA Ready’ Victor Wembanyama

There has never been a player like Victor Wembanyama in the NBA. While sporting the abilities of a guard considerably smaller than him, the towering center is taller than even the tallest of the beginning centers. The Frenchman continually astounded scouts, analysts, fans, and players with his ability as his profile rose in recent years. The bright young player made an impression on his senior national team debut for France.

The Les Bleus defeated Lithuania easily, 90-65, in Panevezys on Friday night, led by 18-year-old Victor Wembanyama, who opened the game with a slam off his own miss and finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 23 minutes.

Victor Wembanyama received praise from Lithuania coach

“You can just imagine his size watching him on the internet… But when a player like Victor comes, you realize his true size. He makes a big impact defensively. Even if we get inside in the paint, we couldn’t see the rim,” Lithuania head coach Kestutis Kemzura said.

With support from the dominant performance away from home, France defeated Lithuania 7-2 to take the lead in Group K in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. The hosts may have secured a spot in the summer’s final round by avoiding loss. Both nations are expected to eventually advance and participate in the World Cup based on the standings.

“I was not nervous at all,” said Vctor Wembanyama after his debut, “I was really hungry to get that win tonight. All of us had a lot of fun out there.”

He didn’t get the chance to establish himself as a star in the EuroLeague until the 2021–22 season, despite his stature. Victor Wembanyama started to demonstrate his full skill set after agreeing to a three-year contract with ASVEL.
