WATCH: Zion Williamson’s late windmill dunk causes stir among Phoenix Suns bench

Zion Williamson led the New Orleans Pelicans to a stunning 128-117 win over the Phoenix Suns at the Smoothie King Center on Friday night. The big man racked up 35 points, seven rebounds, and four assists as the Pelicans moved to the summit of the Western Conference in the NBA standings, overtaking the Suns.

However, the highlight of the game took place towards the end of the final whistle when the Suns literally surrendered the game. But after the Pelicans received the ball in the final seconds, Zion performed a 360-degree windmill dunk to seal the victory for his team. It was also an attempt to send a message to his rivals that not everyone took well.

Was Zion Williamson’s dunk disrespectful?

According to some members of the Suns’ coaching staff, Zion’s late dunk appeared to be disrespectful. It sparked a bit of retaliation from the Phoenix players as well including Jose Alvarado, Cameron Payne, and Chris Paul. There was some pushing, shoving and taunting from both, the Suns and the Pelicans.  However, the security at the stadium quickly took off the brawl and de-escalated the situation.

Nonetheless, there appeared to be a reason behind Zion’s dunk, as there is a simmering rivalry between the two NBA franchises. Last season, the Suns and Pelicans met in the first round of the playoffs, but Phoenix was able to get the better of their Conference rivals. However, Zion missed the series due to injury. He is now back in action for New Orleans and looks in the mood for revenge.
