With the first pitch scheduled for Thursday, Miami (51-37) will attempt to sweep St. Louis (35-51) after winning each of the first three games of the four-game series.

Jordan Walker, a rookie from St. Louis, blasted a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning after Miami regained the lead.

Miami has won 21 one-run games this season, although this one wasn’t as tight as their other games. The number of runs the Marlins need to win a game decided by one run was the highest of the season.

Jordan Hicks, the closer, had a throwing error in the walk-off defeat.

Hicks was sent in to pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to defend a 9-8 lead over the Miami Marlins. Hicks and the Cardinals are in danger after a walk and a single follow a strikeout for the inning’s opening out.

With two outs in the ninth, Jordan Walker’s game-winning two-run home run off reliever A.J. Puk allowed Miami, which ended with 13 hits, to lose a lead that it had built up by five runs in the third, one run in the fourth, and again with two outs in the third.

Following a soft grounder by Joey Wendle back to the pitcher’s mound, it was anticipated that Hicks would throw to Paul Goldschmidt at first for the second out. However, the toss did not turn out as expected.

The Marlins are on course to surpass the franchise’s single-season win record (92) with a record of 51-37. Despite having a run differential of minus seven, they are second in the National League.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, are still having a terrible season. They were considered the favourites to win the NL Central going into the season, but with a record of 35–51, they are currently last in the division. Now, they have dropped eight of their last 12 contests.

Overall, the Marlins’ return to a season-best 14 games over.500 contrasts with the Cardinals’ unfavorably surprise return to a season-worst 16 games below.500. The last game on Wednesday night served as a stark reminder that the teams will be very different in 2023.

On Thursday night, the two teams will be back at Marlins Park as the hosts attempt to sweep the four-game series.
