WATCH:- A Determined Baker Mayfield Trains as a Defensive Line as He Works to Get Back the Starting Quarterback Role

Things have been tough for both Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers. After three years at Oklahoma, Mayfield was drafted as the number one overall pick in the 2018 draft where the Cleveland Browns availed of his services. At the time, there was a lot of buzz and excitement around Mayfield and he was seen as the person who could help out a struggling Browns offense.

Unfortunately for all parties involved, things did not play out as it was expected. Mayfield Mayfield set the rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns, along with ending a 19-game winless streak for the Browns in his debut. However, injuries, inconsistent play, and a conflict with the Browns’ management forced him to leave the team he joined as a Heisman trophy winner.

While many hoped that things would change at the Panthers for Mayfield, it unfortunately has not. Mayfield started the first three games of the season. He then suffered an injury that kept him on the sidelines. Unfortunately for him, when he was fit and ready to return to action, he was benched by P.J Walker, who is having the season of his life.

Baker Mayfield ready to take on a challenge

Thankfully, it does not seem as though being benched by Walker is something Mayfield has taken negatively. He was spotted training as a defensive line as he helped out his teammates during tumultuous times. In a recent interview, Mayfield also shared his thoughts on being relegated to the backup quarterback and how that is not something he is focused on.

He said, “I care about winning right now. We’ll see what happens. This is a great place. I would love to be here, but a lot of that stuff is out of my control. So I handle what I can, control what I can and just stay in the moment. Right now, that’s focusing on going to Cincinnati and trying to find a way to win.”

Baker Mayfield continued, “That’s the way this league is. There’s ups and downs. You hit adversity, you hit the crossroads. It’s how you handle it. Because how you handle it speaks volumes to the character and what you’re trying to do.”
