Warriors Draymond Green Suspended: Series Of Acts That Lead To This Step Taken By NBA

The NBA confirmed Draymond Green’s suspension for Game 3 of the Warriors-Kings series on Thursday night.

Given that Green was “unlikely” to be banned early on Tuesday, the decision is only moderately shocking. However, the NBA said in a statement that the Golden State Warriors forward’s punishment was akin to receiving a career achievement medal. The majority of the league’s statement was boilerplate, alluding to Green’s “stepping on the chest” of Domantas Sabonis in the fourth quarter of Monday’s Game 2 after the Kings center clutched his ankle. However, one sentence jumped out in particular:

“The suspension was based in part on Green’s history of unsportsmanlike acts.”

2016: Game 5 NBA Finals suspension for altercation with LeBron James

The 2016 NBA Finals may be the most well-known of all of Green’s incidents, and many believe that the Warriors’ triumph was jeopardized by his ban. At halfcourt in Game 4, Green and LeBron James were entangled. As James attempted to step over Green, Green stretched his arm and made contact with James’ groin.

The play was initially given a double foul call, but after reviewing it, the NBA determined that Green’s actions were for a Flagrant 1 penalty. Green was suspended for Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Playoffs following his fourth flagrant foul since he had previously committed three flagrant fouls.

You already know the rest of the story: James led the Cavaliers to victory after they had fallen down 3-1 in the series, defeating Golden State in a historic Game 7 on their home court.

2018-19: Suspension for an altercation with teammate Kevin Durant

2018 saw the Warriors punish Green for “conduct detrimental to the team” and one game without pay after an argument with teammate Durant.

When Durant called for the ball in the waning seconds of a regular-season game against the Clippers, Green chose to run coast-to-coast instead, weaving through traffic before throwing the ball over. Green and Durant got into a heated argument on the bench in between quarters before the Warriors failed to get a shot off and ultimately lost in overtime.

2022-23: Fined for punching teammate Jordan Poole

Although there was no suspension as a consequence of this incident, Green is nonetheless remembered for it.

film from a Warriors practice that showed Green striking his teammate Poole in the face emerged during the 2022–23 preseason.

Because of the offensive video, many expected a team-issued ban, similar to what happened with Durant. However, Golden State decided to punish Green and have him take a short break from the club instead.

Green was allowed to suit up for the opening game of the 2022–23 season after playing in the Warriors’ last preseason game.

2022-23: Suspended for season-long technical foul limit

Green was penalized with an unpaid one-game ban during the end of the 2022–23 season after receiving his 16th technical foul of the year.

Once a player (or coach) earns his 16th technical foul during the regular season, he is immediately suspended by the NBA for one game without pay. During the regular season, a player (or coach) would be punished for an extra game without pay for every additional technical foul they incurred.

On March 15, Green received his 16th technical foul in the Warriors’ defeat against the Clippers. On March 17 against the Hawks, a game Golden State defeated by eight, he was given his one-game ban.
