Warriors’ Coach Steve Kerr Explains Chris Paul’s Importance In The Team
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was candid while discussing Chris Paul’s status on the team with ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.
Warriors’ Coach Steve Kerr Explains Chris Paul’s Importance In The Team
Enter Chris Paul, who Steve Kerr feels will provide his team with the stylistic diversity it lacked the previous season due to his general command of NBA offense, whether it be setting the stage for teammates or in his go-to pick-and-roll. Paul’s inclusion in Team USA training camp was mentioned by the Warriors coach, who praised Point God’s basketball brilliance for its many advantages.
"Our team last year needed another way to attack. We became a little too one dimensional with Steph [Curry] in high ball screens. We needed another playmaker to give us a different look."

“He’s so smart. He controls games. He’s thinking three steps ahead all the time. He gets any shot he wants in the mid-range,” Kerr told Sports Illustrated of Paul. “Our team last year needed another way to attack, and we became a little too one-dimensional with Steph in high ball screens. We needed another playmaker to give us a different look. As we all know, Chris is one of the all-time great pick-and-roll players, and he’ll know how to control the tempo. It’s hugely important, especially in playoff games, to have guys like that and they’re hard to find.”

“I think that’ll be a case where you get three weeks of training camp before that first game,” said Kerr. “We’ll just look at all kinds of different combinations. The main thing is we know all those guys are going to play a lot of minutes. But the luxury of having Chris Paul to add to this group that we’ve been lucky enough to have for a decade… pretty remarkable. He is one of the great competitors in the game. He’s one of the great point guards of all time. I think he’s a great addition for us, because of his ability to control games, control tempo, take care of the ball.”

When Curry leaves the starting lineup, Golden State has traditionally struggled offensively. The Warriors are hoping that Paul’s signing can stop that long-running trend, keep the squad organized and offensively effective, and make life simpler for players like Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga.

Given that there has been considerable discussion around Paul’s position on Golden State, especially whether he would start or come off the bench, Kerr’s candor regarding his team’s offensive reliance on Curry is, to put it mildly, intriguing. Such a choice has not been made, at least not in the open.
