On Saturday, Pete Alonso left the New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Angels game early. As the two sides squared up in the much-anticipated second game of their series, the benches were emptied.

Pete Alonso dropped his head and winced as he prepared for the kind of collision he had already endured far too frequently. His helmet only partially protected him as José Soriano’s opening pitch curveball dipped down and smacked him at the back of his head, on the neck.

It was another worrying incident for a player who has received repeated blows to the head in previous years that many Mets felt defied explanation.

The Mets were attempting to tie the game as they fell behind 5-3. The Mets hitter was injured on the back of his helmet, very near his neck, by Jose Soriano’s breaking ball on the very first pitch.

The ball struck him just high enough to grab his helmet, so the injuries might have been considerably worse. Alonso was a little irate when Soriano approached him.

The Mets, who have been remiss this year by losing their composure when batters are hit, jumped out of the dugout to swiftly defend Alonso.

The brawl swiftly ended before any punches could be thrown, despite the fact that both dugouts and benches were emptied.

Logan O’Hoppe, the catcher for the Angels, and the Mets hitter who was struck by pitch for a National League record 17 times this season.

“I was trying to just defuse the situation,” O’Hoppe said. “We’re not trying to hit him, I told him. It was a curveball, and they were upset. I mean, he got hit in the head. It’s not a good thing. You’re never happy, so I understand it. Obviously what happened, happened. But I’m also new to the league and he’s a damn good player, so I’m not trying to start anything with him.”

Before the situation on the field could return to normal, a few minutes passed. Pete Alonso was examined by the trainers. Due to a possible concussion, he had to be taken out of the game; had the batter remained, his condition may have become worse.

“This is not the first time that’s happened,” Francisco Lindor said. “Hopefully tomorrow he comes in and he’s ready to go, and he gets back to hitting home runs.”
