According to a statement from the Lincoln Police Department, Gilbert was detained without incident as he was bringing a bag out of a booze and vape shop.

The college football community has been shocked by the arrest, which was seen on camera and shared on social media.

They found him carrying a bag containing more than $1,600 worth of cigarettes, lighters, and Delta 8 items.

In a video of the event that has gone viral on social media, the 21-year-old can be seen breaking into the business, wandering around its rooms, and making off with the loot before being apprehended by police.

Just before two in the morning, police responded to a burglary allegation and arrived to find the store’s glass entrance broken. According to the police statement, Gilbert, 21, was discovered in possession of stolen goods totaling more than $1,600, including vaping products. $650 is the estimated cost of the store’s damage.

His arrest for burglary, a felony in Nebraska, landed him in the Lancaster County prison.

A little while later, he reappears in the picture once more, this time with his face covered by a shirt. Gilbert breaks through a door, gathers some stuff, then throws the goods away as he sees the cops arrive.

The cops then handcuff him.

After learning of Gilbert’s arrest, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule told reporters on Tuesday that he was “obviously really disappointed, really sad” for Gilbert.

Rhule is unsure of how Gilbert’s arrest will affect his future standing with the team at this time.

“I’m not prepared to speak on that,” Rhule said. “I don’t know anything about it, I really just got that phone call and I’m not going to jump to conclusions about things.”

“When we took Arik, we knew we had a good group of people who could help him through some of the issues he’s dealing with in his life,” Rhule told reporters. “Had been really proud of the job he had done in the spring and summer. To be honest, during camp he’s had some struggles. He’s been working to overcome them. We have a great group of people who are trying to help him and then obviously last night happened, so I don’t have a lot of details.”

Gilbert began his career at LSU and has 35 catches for 368 yards as a true freshman. Gilbert is regarded as ESPN’s No. 6 overall prospect in the 2020 class.
