Vanderbilt Is Being Bashed For Commemorating Music City Bowl Victory

The Vanderbilt Commodores will visit Kentucky this weekend to commemorate the anniversary of a significant triumph in team history. The squad won the Music City Bowl only 15 years ago.

Vanderbilt Is Being Bashed For Commemorating Music City Bowl Victory

While the victory concluded one of the Commodores’ most successful seasons in recent memory, many have been quick to trash on social media.

Vanderbilt has competed in collegiate football for 120 years. While they were relatively dominating in their early years, they’ve mostly been a conference doormat in the SEC.

Vanderbilt finished 7-6 in 2008 and won its first bowl game since 1955. Winning the Music City Bowl is apparently worthy of remembrance as if it were a bowl game that mattered at the time.

Fans were quick to mock Vanderbilt for recognizing a bowl game victory in a season in which the team finished 7-6.

Vanderbilt has only had three winning seasons in the last 20 years, and if you exclude the years in 2013 and 2014, when they were fortunate to have now-Penn State head coach James Franklin and finished 9-4 both years, the record might be much worse.

So I guess I can understand Vandy supporters for being ecstatic about winning six games and making it to a bowl game because it’s a rare occurrence.

However, I will never understand why a team that finished 7-6 and beat Boston College in the Music City Bowl is being celebrated as if it were a National Championship.

College football fans have been critical of the announcement on social media.

“Such a Vandy thing to do,” one follower said.

“This is so sad,” another said.

“Vanderbilt’s national championship,” one fan said of the Music City Bowl festivities.

Someone another inquired, “Am I reading this right?”

What are we doing here, people? The Music City Bowl is a shambles. If bowl games were to be cut, this would be towards the top of the list.

Being selected for the Music City Bowl is not something to be proud of. It suggests your club had a subpar season. During the 2008 regular season, Vandy went 6-6. They’re out here celebrating now?
