Her injuries prevented her from participating in games during her first year at USC.

A year and a half later, as a redshirt freshman, she made her USC Trojans debut.

When Aaliyah was taken to the hospital, Dr. Allison McNickle, a trauma surgeon at University Medical Center, was on call and had to determine the extent of the injuries.

In response to the wounds, Dr. Allison stated: “The biggest challenge was she’d been shot so many times, trying to find all the holes, and make sure you weren’t missing any.”

The gunfire caused injuries to her wrist, right arm, right thigh bone, right shin, right ankle, and left shin in addition to breaking her left forearm.

There was also so much damage to the artery just behind her left knee that an amputation was being contemplated.

Gayles had surgery to replace rods to stabilize her leg fractures and restore the blood vessels in her leg.
