UFC Pundit Chael Sonnen Believes Max Holloway Could Be Angling for a Rematch Against UFC Megastar Conor McGregor

In the days leading up to his UFC 276 title fight against Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway discussed Conor McGregor’s highly talked about potential comeback fight in an interview with ESPN.

Following these comments made by ‘Blessed’, Former UFC title challenger turned MMA pundit Chael Sonnen opined on Holloway’s motives for taking Conor McGregor’s name. Per Sonnen, Max Holloway is potentially vying for a rematch against McGregor who is inarguably the biggest star in the UFC right now.

Conor McGregor’s star power knows no limits and anyone who faces him receives a massive paycheck. Apart from the potential monetary incentives to face ‘The Irishman’, Max Holloway would also have the opportunity to avenge a loss to McGregor that he suffered back in 2014 while he was on the come-up in the UFC.

McGregor finished Max Holloway on the feet, albeit a version of Holloway that seems unrecognizable to this day.

Sonnen made it clear that he believes Max Holloway is simply angling for an opportunity to rematch McGregor for all the marbles.

“If anybody has the right to an opinion – who can understand our industry, who can think like a fighter would think, and who could plan the move of a former opponent – I think Max is a great guy to turn to on the whereabouts of Conor McGregor.”

Chael Sonnen continued, “It’s a very weird concept. Not to mention, what if Max didn’t even mean it? What if that was Max’s way of trying to get his name associated with Conor to try to get a rematch with Conor. I mean, not for nothing, you have to consider all of these things. If a guy is speaking, and he is doing anything less than negotiating, he is a fool. I don’t think Max is a fool.” [h/t bjpenn.com]

Max Holloway would hold a lot of bargaining power in a potential rematch against Conor McGregor if he is able to secure the title off Alexander Volkanovski this weekend. ‘Blessed’ is 0-2 against Volkanovski, and a win over him at this stage would solidify him as a all-time great featherweight.
