UCLA Coach Chip Kelly Sees A Resemblance Between Patrick Mahomes & Caleb Williams
Caleb Williams, the quarterback for USC, is the finest player in college football, right?
Prior to the 2023 season, the excitement around the Trojans’ Heisman Trophy winner is genuine, to the point that the 21-year-old signal-caller is being compared to two-time Super Bowl champion and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

They aren’t running quarterbacks, but they can both run effectively. They engage in arm-angle activities. Both are really precise. Among the skills Caleb Williams possesses? He makes all of the easy layup throws.

Williams’ “layup stuff” is what makes him stand out from the competition and will guarantee his place as the first overall choice in the future NFL Draft.
During a press conference held this week for media, Kelly discussed the strategy his team is using to shut down one of the nation’s most dynamic offenses, led by the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams.
“Yeah, he’s probably as good as there is in the country. There’s a reason he won the Heisman Trophy last year, and he’s a truly special player in all of college football, and one for the ages, you know, in terms of what he’s able to do. He makes some plays where you just kind of shake your hade and go “Oh my god”.
"The 49ers would be a more viable Super Bowl contender with Baker Mayfield. The Bucs would be in Caleb Williams sweepstakes with Brock Purdy." 👀

Chip Kelly compared Williams’ ability to make plays off the schedule to that of Patrick Mahomes, the two-time Super Bowl champion.
“I haven’t seen Patrick in person, but obviously watching tape you can that. He’s got those type of qualities. His ability to make plays off-schedule are as good as I’ve seen in-person. His ability to throw the ball, find open receivers, keep plays alive. It looks like he’s hemmed in, he’s going to be sacked, but then he keeps himself alive. That’s a really, really special quality he has and I think we have to be really disciplined in our rush lanes in terms of trying to get after him and contain him because the big plays that he makes, non-schedule big plays , um, have been huge for them not only this year, but last year.
Last season, Williams amassed 52 total touchdowns (42 passing, 10 running) and passed for 4,537 yards. Cowherd thinks that Williams’s Mahomes-like accuracy and vision are at an elite level.
This could be Caleb Williams last game ever in Cardinal and Gold. If it is, the Trojan family could not be more thankful for everything you have done for the program. Thank you ✌️ pic.twitter.com/oPPN0I543Z

Lincoln Riley, the head coach of USC, believes that fans should keep in mind that Williams still has a long way to go before he can compete with Mahomes.
“I have to remind people that Caleb didn’t play his senior year of high school and only half the year his first year at Oklahoma,” Riley stated. “Obviously, [Mahomes] is the best quarterback in the game and that’s a flattering comparison, but Caleb’s got a long way to go to get to that.”
2026 QB @logan_coppedge is so electric! Kid has amazing foot work in the pocket and throws very well on the run. It’s amazing how he gets some of these passes off honestly. His style reminds me of Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray and Caleb Williams (Not saying he’s on that level but… pic.twitter.com/aETvJ09xSz

Even Williams, who values the opinions of others, is attempting to concentrate on his game rather than the hype.
“Mahomes has been the best guy in the league basically since he got in the league,” Williams said. “He’s been playing at the highest level. I just say — respect. The man [has] got two Super Bowls under his belt, and I’ve got not even one national championship.
The sheer amount of potentially generational type prospects over the next three NFL Drafts is INSANE:
