Tua Tagovailoa Post Win Speaks On His ‘Great Relationship With Coach Mike McDaniel’, Indirect Critique To Ex-Coach!

After their bye week, the Dolphins won their fifth straight game on Sunday, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa continued to be a key component of their success.

Before leaving the game with the Dolphins comfortably ahead of the Texans in the second half, he was 22-of-36 for 299 yards and two touchdowns. After the game, Tagovailoa spoke with Aditi Kinkhabwala on the field about the importance of Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel to his accomplishments.

Tua Tagovailoa’s Chemistry With Ex-Coach

The Dolphins, who at the time had the controversial Brian Flores as their head coach and who had left the South Florida team after last season amid a scandal in which he accused owner Stephen Ross of purposefully losing games, selected the talented passer in the first round of the 2020 Draft—5th overall—from the University of Alabama.

Little is, however, stated about the poor chemistry that Tua and Flores never managed to create, unlike what the left-handed quarterback has done with Mike McDaniel, who has taken over the role for this season.

Tua On His Bond With Current HC Mike McDaniel

In addition to highlighting his wonderful bond with McDaniel, Tagovailoa hasn’t been shy to mention in passing how difficult it was for him to collaborate with Flores.

“Having someone that first off believes in you makes all the difference,” Tua Tagovailoa said. “Having someone that calls me randomly just telling me how much I mean to him and the things that he’s trying to accomplish and we’re trying to accomplish as a team. It’s cool. I’ve never had that, I’ve never experienced that. This is my first time experiencing that kind of relationship with someone that is the head coach of an organization — just love that guy.”

When questioned about Tua Tagovailoa’s remarks during his press conference, McDaniel responded that he felt the quarterback lacked confidence. Because of this, restoring it was a crucial aspect of his first few months on the job.

“It was intuition, and it started seeing him every practice once he started getting a little bit more confidence each and every day. You could see his personality evolve and that’s when I learned kind of how deep it was, because I’m learning his personality – the first day I meet him is who I know him as, and then you fast forward a month and a half, and he’s a different guy. Then retroactively, like wow, that was real.”
