Top UFC Contender Gilbert Burns Reveals the One Regret He Holds From His Fight Against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273
Top-ranked UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns spoke to Daniel Cormier and Ryan Clark on their ESPN show in the wake of UFC 273. ‘Durinho’ fought valiantly but ultimately came up short against Khamzat Chimaev, who won via unanimous decision. However, Burns put forth a spectacular account of himself and earned the respect of everyone in the MMA community.
Gilbert Burns managed to show the MMA world that ‘Borz’ Chimaev was indeed not some invincible force and that he does bleed like anyone else. Prior to facing off against Burns, Khamzat Chimaev obliterated everyone he faced inside the octagon with extreme ease. However, in the hard-fought battle, ‘Borz’ showed that he had heart and toughness along with high-level skill.
Gilbert Burns’ regret from his UFC 273 fight against Khamzat Chimaev
Daniel Cormier asked Burns if he had any regrets about taking the fight against Chimaev. The risk to reward ratio was extremely off balance since Chimaev was ranked number 11 while Burns was risking his number two ranking. However, Burns said that he regretted nothing except the fact that the fight was only three rounds and not five rounds.
“The only regret I have is to accept the fight on three rounds. I should get that fight in five rounds the way I asked. I should fight a little more but they sent the fight with three rounds. My regret is I should fight a little bit more.”
‘Borz’ Chimaev appeared to be slowing down as the contest was playing out and it’s very possible that he would have gassed out. This would have been the perfect opportunity for Gilbert Burns to come in and capitalize on Chimaev’s diminishing power and speed. However, this is merely a supposition since ‘Borz’ was fierce despite showing some signs of slowing down.
Gilbert Burns is keen to settle the score against Chimaev in a rematch that would likely be a five-round war. Neither man has shown any signs of wanting to relent and fans certainly wouldn’t be opposed to seeing both men scrap once more.
