Top 3 tight ends for the 2022 season

As the spread offense started to dominate the NFL throughout the years, lots of positions went through changes and tight end was one of them.

Whilst in previous decades their biggest assignment was to provide an extra blocking option, modern tight ends have to contribute a lot more in the passing game. If you can do both, then you belong to the position’s elite; but you need to be great in more than one way.

Check out the top three tight ends for the 2022 NFL season:

#1 – Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs

We’ve mentioned in our piece about quarterbacks how Mahomes would be under pressure to deliver in 2022 with a new group of wide receivers; he still has an elite threat in Travis Kelce, though. The tight end has been a model of performance and consistency over the last decade and he’s already one of the greatest tight ends of all time. With elite receiving ability and great blocking technique, Kelce’s quality is unmatched in the NFL.

#2 – George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

Kittle’s blocking ability is not only the best in the NFL but he can be considered one of the best blockers of all time. He helps the 49ers massively in the run game and he’s vital to Kyle Shanahan’s outside zone running scheme. His receiving ability is also fantastic, as he put 1377 receiving yards during the 2018 season. He’s not as consistent as Kelce on a week-to-week basis and he has been dealing with some injuries over the past seasons, two things that give the Chiefs’ player an advantage. But Kittle is also an elite player.

#3 – Darren Waller, Las Vegas Raiders

If we do this list again after the end of the season, Waller’s place might be under threat from Kyle Pitts and Mark Andrews. For now, we’ll believe that he’ll be back to his best as Derek Carr’s safety blanket, even with Davante Adams joining the team. His receiving ability is elite and he provides a lot of value as a blocker as well, although there’s a slight drop in quality when comparing him to guys like Kittle and Kelce. Still, Waller’s journey is impressive, just like his qualities as a player.
