The guy in question, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, is Mauricio Ortega, and his publication will issue a comment about the event. According to Rapoport, Ortega is a former official with the Mexican newspaper La Prensa, as reported by Conor Orr of NFL.com.

During his postgame news conference, Brady addressed the incident, saying, “I put it in my bag and then came out and it wasn’t there anymore, so it’s unfortunate because that’s a nice piece of memorabilia.” So, if it appears on eBay someplace, please let me know so that I can attempt to track it down.”

A Houston Police Department official told A.J. Perez of USA Today three days after the Super Bowl that they had dispatched “several” investigations to find Brady’s jersey.

According to a police report acquired by TMZ from the Houston Police Department, the jersey is worth $500,000.

The probe not only resulted in the recovery of the in question jersey but also of another Brady jersey that had gone missing after Super Bowl XLIX, as well as the helmet Von Miller wore when the Broncos defeated the Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

Ortega (who described the theft as “an impulse from an uncontrollable fan”) resigned from the newspaper before it could fire him, and despite allegedly possessing around $1 million in Super Bowl merchandise, he avoided serious punishment after agreeing to return the items.

While Mexican and American authorities had a strong case, Brady was unwilling to bring criminal charges (he had earlier remarked, “I’ll take the ring” and that’s good enough for me”), which meant the only serious repercussions Ortega faced was the hit to his professional reputation.

While Ortega acknowledged to removing Brady’s jersey, he provided no explanation for Brady’s Super Bowl XLIX jersey or Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller’s Super Bowl 50 helmet, both of which were discovered at his home. Since then, all things have been restored to their proper owners.
