Tom Brady Received Backlashes For Comparing Football To Military

After equating participating in the NFL with being sent to countries like Afghanistan, Tom Brady infuriated a lot of people.

On his SiriusXM program Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald, and Jim Gray, the 45-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback spoke out on finding a work-life balance.

Tom Brady Received backlashes For Comparing Football And Military

Fans took offence to his statements about the grind of an NFL season and how the start of a new campaign is like being sent off on military duty, with many criticising him on social media.

Many felt that Brady had shown disrespect to soldiers who had been deployed because he was being paid millions of dollars to toss a football as opposed to what military men get paid for, risking their lives for their country. This angered many people.

In an interview with Brady, he said: “I almost look at a football season like you’re going away on a military deployment, and it’s like, man, here I go again.”
Then, he continued, “I need my strong competitive spirit to deal with the long hours of a league season.”

When it comes down to it, your competitiveness takes control, Brady continued. “As much as you want to have this playful balance with the professional balance, you’re going to wind up doing exactly what you’ve always done, which is why you are who you are.”

Of course, Brady’s comparison of starting a new NFL season to being sent away for military service sparked a backlash on social media.

Reactions to Tom Brady’s comments

There were numerous military veterans who took to social media and didn’t hesitate to hit out at Brady for his comments.

‘Oh Tom Brady… go f**k yourself,” wrote one Twitter user called Heather.

“Being a football quarterback is not even close to military deployment.

“I couldn’t see my children at all for a year. They couldn’t fly out to watch me do my job whenever they wanted.

“I could only call my mom once a week, on the phone with a 10-second delay that she couldn’t figure out, so we were constantly talking over each other.

“I was afraid to say how I was doing, she would have gotten upset, and it could have affected her health, so I lied.

“Every day for a year, our FOB was hit with missiles, RPGs, and small arms fire.

“I remember sitting outside one day and watching a missile fly overhead to strike the buildings about a half mile behind mine.

Brady Apologised For his Statement

Tom Brady, the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, apologised at the start of his weekly press conference on Thursday for comparing the NFL season to military deployment in his Monday “Let’s Go!” podcast with Jim Gray.

Before answering questions, Brady added, “Earlier this week, I made a statement about playing football and the military, and it was a terrible choice of words. “I simply want to clarify any lingering concerns folks might have interpreted it in a particular way. So I’m sorry.”
