“They’re Bonding”: Coach Ron Rivera is Happy About the Washington Commanders Duo Before Camp

Coach Ron Rivera of the Washington Commanders saw more in receiver Terry McLaurin than merely a receiver who needed to be extended. He was a crucial member of a team that was working to repair its reputation as a result of a congressional probe. Wednesday’s news conference by Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin included a discussion of his new contract as well as the team’s new quarterback.

Carson Wentz’s performance in his first season with Washington will be a key factor in McLaurin‘s success in 2022, but the two didn’t have a chance to practice together this spring while McLaurin was away from the team for contract talks.

After the agreement was reached, McLaurin told the media that his next step would be to work out with Wentz before training camp begins at the end of the month.

Washington Commanders coach praises Terry McLaurin-Carson Wentz duo

“Something I learned from Mike Ditka [is] it’s not just going to be about what they’re doing as far as the X’s and O’s, but just the fact that they’re going to be together,” Rivera said, via David Harrison of SI.com.

“That’s the thing that you feel good about, because you know that they’re bonding, they’re coming together and as Terry said, ‘It’s not just about what I do on the football field, but hey, I got your back.’ That sends a strong message to your quarterback and it sends a strong message to his teammates.”

McLaurin received a significant increase after finishing the previous season with 1,053 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 77 receptions.

Dan Snyder, the owner of Washington, is being investigated by Congress since October. On June 22, a hearing was convened, and Snyder opted not to show up or provide a videotaped testimony. The Democratic leadership of the House Oversight Committee is still negotiating with Snyder’s lawyers to persuade him to give testimony on the work environment in Washington.
